The practice

The Belconnen Mall Medical Centre is a mixed billing practice that opened in 2018. It is situated in a prime high-traffic position in the busy Westfield Belconnen Shopping Centre and is within a DPA.

The practice has a patient base of 17,000 and growing. With over 700 new patients a month, it’s the perfect opportunity for doctors to build up their practice. Our team of doctors is well supported by innovative technology and dedicated staff. Belconnen Mall Medical Centre uses the top clinical software – Best Practice, as well as one of the largest online health appointment booking services – HotDoc.

The practice is ultra-modern and high tech. The design is driven by distinct architectural principles, with a strict focus on maximising space and workflow. Circulation is made efficient within the long floor shape, making use of two waiting rooms. The formality of the architecture is contrasted with the vibrant playfulness of Donna Sharam’s artwork. The entrance to the practice is located next to the outside carpark which provides the waiting area with some natural light.

The shopping centre

The Belconnen Mall Medical Centre is conveniently located inside Westfield Belconnen Shopping Centre. 15 minutes’ drive from Canberra’s CBD, the shopping centre is the hub of Belconnen.

Westfield Belconnen is one of the largest shopping centres in Canberra, featuring 276 retailers and services over three levels, including a cinema complex, homemaker hub, and a new restaurant precinct. The shopping centre services a total trade area of approximately 459,000 residents, offering a regular roster of events, seven-day trading and late-night shopping with the peace of mind of 24-hour security.

This attractive multi-storey shopping centre provides 2,880 car spaces with two hours free parking. The centre is also serviced by the Westfield Belconnen Bus Station, which is situated at one of its entrances.

Belconnen is named after one of the earliest land grants made in the area during colonial times, of 800 hectares to the explorer, Charles Sturt. The name itself is believed to be of Aboriginal origin.

Belconnen

Belconnen is the most populous district within Canberra with 96,000 people. It is comprised of 25 suburbs and is situated entirely within the bounds of the city of Canberra.

Belconnen is a convenient place to live and work. It is home to the picturesque Lake Ginninderra, which is adjacent to the shopping centre. Fishing, canoeing and dragon-boating on the lake are popular after-work and weekend activities for locals and the parks, playgrounds and walking paths on its banks attract families, joggers and cyclists from all over the district. Other popular local attractions include the Belconnen Arts Centre as well as the Belconnen Skate Park.

As part of Belconnen’s master plan, several high-rise developments are underway – including Geocon’s High Society tower, which will be the tallest building in Canberra. The master plan encourages high-rise housing developments across the district and also includes a new commercial precinct opposite Westfield.

Canberra

Canberra, the nation’s capital, has a population of around 400,000 people and covers 814 square kilometres.

All our medical centres in the area, except for Hyperdome, are in districts classified as DPA (Distribution Priority Area) and are near the CBD. This is in contrast with cities like Sydney or Melbourne where DPAs are much further away.

Canberra has been named the world’s most sustainable city in 2021, according to Uswitch. The 2019 ‘Life In Australia’ report from Ipsos market research named it as the most liveable city in the country – for the third year in a row. The study showed that Canberrans feel safer living here and happier about their access to work and education than the residents of every other Australian capital city. Canberra was also named by Lonely Planet as the world’s third best city to travel to in 2018 (ahead of Melbourne and Sydney in 6th and 7th place).

Canberra offers a terrific diversity of attractions and experiences. There’s a whole world of cultural events, entertainment, dining, and places to visit – all contained within a city that is easy to get around.

Finding a home

Property prices are lower and more reasonable in Canberra compared to other major cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. The Australian Capital Territory has a median house price of $722,440 and a median unit price of $426,719 (Domain House Price Report, March 2019).

Accessibility and infrastructure

Canberra is well laid out and easy to get around by car, bus, bicycle or on foot. The city provides convenient vehicle and bike access due to future-proofed roads and there is abundant parking. The latest transport option is the Canberra Metro light rail line, with stage-1 northwards from the CBD to Gungahlin in service now and plans for further links under consideration or soon to commence construction.

Environment

Canberra abounds with beautiful lakes and spectacular bushland with many bush walks, bike trails and wildlife reserves to explore. Canberra is known as ‘the bush capital’ of Australia. The centrepiece of Canberra is the large man-made Lake Burley Griffin, which is an ideal water playground for rowing, sailing and kayaking. Cyclists and walkers are well catered for along the 40km shoreline, with numerous parks and gardens to enjoy.

Childcare and schooling

There is a wide range of childcare, preschool, primary school and secondary school facilities in Canberra, with a variety of privately-run and Government-provided options. The A.C.T. is home to the Australian National University, which was ranked first in Australia and 24th globally in the prestigious QS World University Rankings for 2019.

Multiculturalism

Canberra is home to a population with diverse multicultural backgrounds. A recent study showed that 6% of A.C.T. residents reported speaking a language other than English at home – the most common being Italian followed by Macedonian, German, Filipino, Mandarin, and Punjabi (ABS data 2016).

A.C.T. government figures show that the biggest groups of migrants who decide to take up citizenship in the territory were from South Africa, the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, China, Vietnam and the Philippines. Population Australia lists the top six countries of birth for people in Canberra as being from: Australia, England, China, India, New Zealand and Vietnam.
